Eighth Response

Page history last edited by Eric Kroepel 13 years, 6 months ago

Up to this point, pretty much everything we have read has had either an explicit thesis statement or an explicit argument. However, in Shooting War, this is not necessarily the case. There is an argument, but it is buried within the story. PLUS, there is an entirely NEW element involved ... IMAGES!!! These also carry some of the weight of the argument. Your assignment, dear campers, in this response is to attempt to locate the thesis of this graphic novel (seriously, don't call this a "comic book" in front of comic book fans) based on the dialog, images, content, and context and post your 200-250 word response below.

In Shooting War I believe the thesis is If Mccain would have been elected president over Obama things would have been entirely worse off. The book takes place in late 2010 and 2011 starting off showing how there would have been more terriost attacks on U.S. soil if Mccain was elected president. The books then proceedes to show how the war would have been worst off if he was president. There would have been more terriost attacks in various cities, he would have had a personal bias being that his son was taken hostage, the amount of troops inlisting would of went down causeing americans to use robots, and the war would have simply been classified as a war crime. No there is no barings that this actually would of happened but its the authors arguement that things would of been worse if Mccain would have been elected president and he supported it with a series of terrible events that occured through out this graphic novel.

After reading Shooting War, I believe the thesis statement is about what would happen in 2011 with McCain being president.  Reading through the story, there were many terrorist attacks on America as well as on third world countries.  Thousands of innocent people were being killed, citizens in the third world countries were turned against each other, and terrorist were easily blowing simple locations in the US, such as coffee shops, to pieces.  It seemed like terrorist were entering into the country easier than usual.  In my opinion, I believe the author was trying to say that things would've got out of hand if there was ever a chance that there was a different government elected in 2009.  The book states how McCain wouldn't have wanted to run for president for his second term because of all the major issues that got out of hand and because he couldn't deal with his son being kidnapped and held hostage.  To me, this means that McCain wouldn't have been a strong enough president to keep the government authority strong enough to protect citizens from the war as well as protecting troops over-sees.  In the text, he kept sending tens of thousands of troops over-sees which wasn't good seeing as though many people were being held hostage or killed.

After reading, “Shooting Wars”, the thesis statement would be, about the capturing of Osama Bin Laden. The city blew up and what more can a person try to do. Its become less facts with the thoughts of the war. See, when Bush was in office the war begun. Shooting wars is similar to the attacks that have been happening lately. All the killing and death of our troops, family and friends. Shooting wars takes the common main into a mind where the things always blow up. Capture and happiness will begin and the certain facts will always take place. Fight, kill and win, a true BUSH STATEMENT. Shooting wars is similar to the WAR IN IRAQ. END IT WITH JUST ONE WITNESS. Bush makes things so not true. Bush runs for another term and more wars take place

In Shooting War, Jimmy Burns is a common man who is in the right place at the right time. Jimmy who is a constant blogger got a suicide bombing on tape which was sold to the news. This made him famous. He was sent to Afghanistan as a journalist to film the war. Jimmy was to get all the footage he could of the events happening there and report it back to the United States to inform the public. He met up with several battles on the way.  Through his trip off to war, he experienced kidnapping, getting shot at, bombing, and repeated harassment by their terrorist group.

In Shooting War, I believe the thesis is that the world and the war would have been much worse if John McCain was the president instead of Barack Obama. McCain did not seem to have any control over the military's tactics or the war at all. This was shown by Crash, who was thought to be a military legend, yet he was shown killing an innocent civilian. There was also the robots that attacked. He sent many troops as a way to solve the problem, but only more chaos was created. Mccain was distracted by his son's disappearance. He wanted to find him by any means necessary. All of these problems contributed to a heavy toll on his mental state. This mirrors what could have happened in Real life. Many people were skeptical of John McCain because of his age, and it was proven true in the novel. Mccain could not deal, which was seen when he resigned. It was too much for him to be a president, commander in chief and a father.

In the graphic novel, Shooting War, we witness a blogger turned reporter Jimmy Burns endure a tumultous journey in which he always happens to witness catastrophic events. His journey begins as he is videotaping outside his apartment building with a starbucks built inside. And it gets blown up by a terrorist in Brooklyn, New York. As he manages to survive, he is able to video tape the live feed in his blog. And eventually he gets hired by "Global News Television Network" to become a reporter in Iraq. The story is set in 2011 where John McCain is the president of the United States. Burns witnesses a massive amount of bloodshed in Iraq where thousands of innocent kids and civilians are being killed. Some of these killings are questionably due to the robots being employed the the U.S. government. It seems as if the author, Anthony Lappe, is sending out a message that had McCain become president, the world would be in chaos. There would be more terrorist attacks on our soil as well as around the world. Countries and civilians would turn against each other amidst all the violence. In the end of the novel, we are told that President McCain does not want to run for election for the 2nd term because of his son's kidnapping and the mental stress over all the conflicts. In a way, it shows that he would not be able to rise to the challenge of guiding our country through the various wars and terrorism.

Shooting war is a graphic novel about the war on terror.  Many would think this novel it to depict the chaos present in the middle east, and the horrors of terrorism.  However, the authors, Anthony Lappe and Dan Goldman, present the opposite, and argues that American and other countries are terrorists just like the middle-eastern extremists.  They convince the readers of this through a detailed story of a reporter, and graphic representations of what is going on in the middle east.

First off, the title of the novel states their thesis.  The authors are trying to show how it is no longer a war on terror, but a shooting war: a war where anyone shoots anything without question.  As the novel progresses, one can see how this is portrayed to be true.  The main character, Jimmy Burns witness countless attacks where U.S. soldiers are merciless, and kill everyone.  The key, however, is how the soldiers cover it up, and destroy the footage of their brutality.  The authors clearly want the readers to see how the news can change the truth, making it seem like the Iraqi’s and other terror groups are the only problem for the war.  The truth is, both sides are equally to blame.

Other aspects which effectively support their thesis are the plot, and the graphics.  First, the graphics are horrific, even if they are computer generated. Even though they are not real people, this pictures represent the humans lost as collateral damage, most of whom are innocent.  Through seeing the graphics, readers have a better visual on what is really going on, and create validity to the authors’ argument.  The plot also depicts how the news covers up the truth.  Jimmy Burns was originally a news reporter famous for being the edgy, truth seeker.  However, he falls victim to the fame, and politics behind it.  However, he is a dynamic character, and realizes what needs to be done in the end, and leaks the footage of American brutality.  Though doing what is right, the authors are able to convince the readers that this is what needs to be done, and one should consider taking a similar action: looking for the truth, and seeking how the war is no longer about terrorism, but shooting.

In Shoot War John McCain is president in the year 2011 instead of Barrack Obama, and there are numberless terrorist attacks both on the United States and on many smaller countries too. Jimmy Burns is a ceaseless blogger who happens to capture a suicide bombing on tape. He sells the tape to the news, captures a little bit of fame and gets sent to Afghanistan as a journalist that get shots at, kidnapped, harassed by a terrorist group, and even bombed. John McCain has no control of the war situation because he is preoccupied with his son's disappearance. McCain finds himself in deep waters and he resigns. I believe that the thesis of Shooting War is more of a warning of what could have happened if things didn't go the way they did. That if McCain was elected president, the United States and the world would be in a much worse situation.

Shooting Wars explains how the world would be if McCain was elected president. The world would be a total mess and thousands of people would have lost their lives. Jimmy Burns is a live blogger in New York City in the novel Shooting Wars around 2011. He was making a video for his website while he was outside a Starbucks and was filming. While he was filming the Starbucks was blown up by what was called a terrorist attack. Even though the explosion happened, Jimmy was still recording no matter what happened. People were dead, people were trying to escape from the building and he was helping them while still recording. He had lost everything because his apartment was on top of that Starbucks. An owner of a major media company was very interested in Jimmy Burns because of his courage to still record while the building was burning.  He liked what Jimmy was doing so he hired him and gave him a job in Iraq. Five months after that he started in Iraq and it was a mess. There was war in Iraq and he had to cover the biggest death scenes. He was uploading videos to his website for his job. People were getting shot in the head and he was still recording and uploading his news to the internet for his company. Through all the events he was placed in from kids and woman dying to almost losing his own life he would still be recording. That was just amazing what a reporter would do that kind of stuff. We have to ask ourselves if reporters really do that. The book is a summary of what the world could have been if McCain was elected president. When I finished the book, the things that came to my mind were American, war, blood, media, reporters, more media, bullshit, military, deaths and that media causes misconception of the truth. Media alters the minds of people.

The thesis to shooting war is how all the controversy going on in the world spreads from one place to another through media, politics and terrorism. Throughout the whole book every other page is about a web-blogger reporting media to a news network. The web-blogger Jimmy Burns becomes a news journalist celebrity overnight as he reports news throughout Iraq in his terrorist venture. This shows how important media is to the public and the government through accurate situations and presentations by cable news networks.
