In our everyday life we experience something from an advertisement. Most of the ads appeal to the sense, to make people want to but the product that’s being advertised. Advisements are designed in such a way that it appeal to consumers either emotionally or with a logic argument and there could be other ways of attracting the consumers.  Almost everything that’s advertised is compared to another product. Like the product I chose was the subway spokesman Jared Fogle who did a commercial with Ryan Howard, and in the commercial they compared a foot long club sandwich to a McDonald’s burger.

Subway is an American fast food franchise that primarily sells submarine sandwiches, salads and personal pizzas. Subway uses the advertising slogan ‘subway eat fresh” to explain how every sandwich is made on freshly baked bread, using ingredients, in front at the costumer to their exact specification, by employee’s whom subway terms “subway sandwich artist.” Subways uses many spokesman to advertise there product.  In November 2007, subway used commercials featured the Peter Griffin character from family guy in which he extols the virtues of its new subway feast sandwich. Subway has also used instant win competitions based on the game scramble as promotional tools.  Subway also notably has a product placement television advertisement campaign for the U.S series chuck, ongoing since its first season.  Subway not only advertises, but they compare their food to all the other fast food restaurants, subway doesn’t use the term fast food when talking about their product.

Jared Fogle also known as the “subway guy” is a spokesman employed by subway restaurants in its advertising campaigns. He is known for his significant weight loss now known as the “subway diet” attributed to eating subway sandwiches, which led to his role promoting the company. Subway has used Fogle in commercials and sponsored in store appearances throughout the United States.  Jared has a lot of advertisement commercials with celebrities like athletes and movie stars.

The commercial that I chose was the commercial that Jared did with the athlete Ryan Howard. In the commercial they compared a foot long sub from subway to a McDonald’s burger. In the commercial they explained how subways foot long club sandwich still has less than half the fat of a Mc Donald’s burger. They argue that the foot long club sandwich has “less fat but more meat”.

The commercial was very persuasive to me because in the commercials there really wasn’t a lot to distract me, and what I mean by distract me is that it wasn’t nothing but a white back ground with Jared and Ryan standing over a wooden table with a six inch sub, a foot long sub from subway and a Mc Donald’s burger.  The reason why I found this commercial to be very persuasive is because they wasn’t really trying too hard to convince me about the product, it was almost like they knew exactly what they were advertising. I feel that that’s the best way to advertise something and that’s by comparing it to something else that good and common. The good thing about this commercial is they compared a fast food restaurant that almost everybody in the world eats and that’s Mc Donald. Mc Donald is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurant serving more than 58 million customers daily.  But the real question about Mc Donald’s is what is really in those burgers what kind of seasoning they use or the  amount of grease do they use to make those burger also? Subway is by far the best fast food restaurant that’s advertising because not only do they advertise how fresh the subs are but they also advertise the amount of weight you can loss.

In this ad there were pathos logos and ethos. Pathos is the emotion of the audience, today the world is full of obesity and the best thing an obeist person can hear is the fact “they can have it their way in a good way”.  Subway catches oboist consumer’s eye simply because of Jared’s story, people from the audience can relate especially when they want to experience weight lost while still eating the same amount of food if not more than the usual and still lose weight.

All in all after doing this advertisement paper and doing research on subway and the comparing that they use to advertise their subs, it made me rethink about some of the fast food restaurant that I eat today.  I think that’s one of the main reasons why I found this advertisement to be very persuasive.
