Based on your readings in Good Reasons, post a possible term to define here along with a brief explanation of the stakes of this definition.

Bullying- continuous nagging and insulting of an individual by a group of person due to features, race, religion, or demeanor.

I want to write about this because I think its a common problem around the world and kids are affected by it everyday. I was a victim of it and I know many others are as well. I recently read an article over the weekend about teens committing suicide because they can't handle it anymore. I think its a good topic and something you hear of often.

Discrimination-

  1. treating people differently through prejudice: unfair treatment of one person or group, usually because of prejudice about race, ethnicity, age, religion, or gender

People have been discrimated against for years. The main things were discriminated agiainst was being african american and a woman. I am both and couldnt imagine how that could of been. Women are still discriminated now through not making the same amount of money as a man and blacks are still discriminated agianst with the constitution still stating that a black man is one fifth of a man. Now people are tending to discriminate aganist homosexuals. I know many homosexuals and i dont think its right to judge some one over something they cant control ( race, sex, or sexual preference).

Prejudice- A prejudgement or assumption made about someone or something before having adequate knowledge to be able to do so accurately.

There are alot of prejudice people out in this world. Some may think a certain thing about a person because of their race or ethnicity, gender, age, class, sexuality, and many other things. I am one who can't stand to be judged at all, but especially without being known. I believe that most people are judeged by what others do. For example, some people may think all African Americans would robor steal from them, just because a few did it before. Just the other day a friend of mine waslate to class so he had to run. As he was running I saw a woman grab her purse and held it tightly and closely to her with a frighting lookon her face. She probably thought he was up to no good when he was just trying to make it to class on time. I think it's okay to be aware but its not okay to assume things about a person if you dont really know.

Stem Cell Research- A new technology used to look at human stem cells to study and understand their abilities. Stem cells are power cells that can regenerate, and repair themselves and other cells. They are crusial in finding cures to many diseases.

Stem cell research is a popular controversial topic amoungst many people and groups. They are a good to research, because they can help replaced damanged and diseased cells in our bodies. People find this controversial because some stem cells are taken during what is called the "embroyic stage" which involves young fetuses and many argue its unethical. These stem cells are tkaen from either aborted babies or fertilized eggs that were left in invitro fertilization.

Segregation- the separation of different kinds of humans into racial groups.

I've picked the term segregation because it was a major issue back in the 1960's.  It was controversial because it was the time of a series of civil rights movements.  People were torn with segregation because some belived it was a good idea to keep whites and blacks apart while others believed it wasn't fair because african americans weren't getting equal education, quality books, equal services in public restaurants, etc. as white citizens.

Friend - a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations.

Since the recent increase of social networks, the word friend has become less of it's true meaning and developed into a different definition: knowing someone.  If one looks at facebook, people have hundred of "friends."  The truth is that these are not friends but most are just acquaintances.   I believe what most would consider the definition of friend is far from the true definition.

Freedom of Speech - the right of people to express their opinions publicly without governmental interference, subject to the laws against libel, incitement to violence or rebellion, etc.

Though we have a right to express ourselves, some people don't realize how much is too much when stating opinions. An example is all the cyber bullying going on right now, the ones who are expressing their opinions are taking it so far that it is actually offending others so much they would rather die then put up with it.

Homosexual – Having the tendency to direct sexual desire toward another person of the sex.

I chose this word because even though it is more accepted in society today, it is still frowned upon. People have the right to love who they want, and should be happy despite how other people feel about it. Being a homosexual does not affect the type of person that they are. They should be treated fair despite who they like. Everyone should be treated with respect, being a homosexual doesn’t make anyone less of a human being.

Individualism- a social theory advocating the liberty, rights, or independent action of the individual.

This idea has far more reaching implications than people assume. In the past, different countries have experimented with communism and been ruled by dictators. In fact, there are a few that still exist today.

In these countries, citizens do not have the freedoms that we as Americans take for granted in the United States. Their properties are owned by the government, they are paid very similar wages, and thus it leads to an inefficient outcome. These people lack the incentives to work harder or strive for a higher education since they realize that they will inevitably live the same lives.

Racism- a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

I choose this because it is still one of the major issues we face now days, even though it might not be as prevalent as other issues. Still to this day racism is present in certain part of the world and even in certain parts of America. Everyone should be treated equally because we are all human being but just because one is from a certain part of the world, they are looked down upon.

Drug - A form of chemical that enters the blood stream in many different ways to stimulate the mind, altering the thinking process and ultimately having a abnormal feeling going through the body or mind.

Everyone uses drugs, whether it's alcohol, marijuana or pain relievers, nobody can deny it. Drugs can be good or bad, they can help save lives in a hospital, reduce chronic pain, or even put someone to sleep. On the contrary, drugs are abused for the body or mind "high" effect that one can receive from taking a drug when its not necessary, such as drinking too much at a party, taking pain pills to get through work, or smoking a joint before going to class, all of these ways are improper  use of drugs and illegal to act in such a way, if the substance isn't already illegal.

Power - ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something; or  political ascendancy or control in the government of acountry, state, etc.

Power plays a huge role in society. The government has the power to control people by implementing more rules and citizens have the power to rebel against what rules are in effect. In a sense without power society would crumble on top of the foundation it was build on thats why citizens vote for a leader to run their country. In america, the president is the most powerful man in the nation, though he is just a person like you, the person next to you and I we, as a population, voted to give this one man all the power the country has to offer.
